Clark County Legal Community Convenes to Honor Law Day and Community Service Liberty Bell Awards Featured at May Bar Luncheon LAS VEGAS - May 21, 2010. On May 20, at what has become a tradition, the Clark County Bar Association's (CCBA) May Luncheon brought together several members of the local legal community. This year, special presentations were made by the Clark County Law Foundation (CCLF), Clark County Bar Association and the State Bar of Nevada.
CCBA President A. Wayne Carter kicked-off the event with a special presentation to the bar's former Executive Director Eric Mann thanking him for his decade of service. The State Bar of Nevada then presented grant checks to several local legal organizations in support their community service activities. Next, the CCLF Community Service Committee honored Las Vegas Justice Court Judge Nancy Oesterle and attorney Robert Nelson-Kortland with Liberty Bell Awards. Finally, keynote speaker Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman addressed members of the bar on the state of the city. A highlight of the event was the presentation of the Liberty Bell Awards. An annual activity of the CCLF Community Service Committee, done in conjunction with Law Day, the Liberty Bell Awards honor members of the local legal community who promotes a better understanding of the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights; encourages greater respect for the law and the courts; stimulates a deeper sense of individual responsibility so citizens recognize their duties as well as their rights; contributes to the effective functioning of our governmental institutions; fosters a better understanding and appreciation of the law. Both Judge Nancy Oesterle and Robert Nelson-Kortland were nominated by their colleagues for this honor. Judge Oesterle graciously accepted the Liberty Bell Award and shared memories of her dedicated service to the bench, the bar and the community at large. Mr. Nelson-Kortland was honored posthumously; his award was accepted by legal assistant Christy Beckwith, a friend and former co-worker at the City of Las Vegas Senior Citizens Law Project. The CCBA May Luncheon was sponsored by the Bank of Nevada and Pinkerton Consulting & Investigations with photography provided courtesy of Vincent Kostiw of AlsacePhoto.com. Images from this luncheon may be found in the CCBA Photo Gallery. Trial By Peers Needs Your Help To the Members of the Clark County Bar Association: Since 1993, Trial By Peers (TBP), our renowned teen court program, has been making a huge impact on thousands of teens throughout the Clark County area. With the hard work of our volunteers and staff, these teens are given the opportunity to get back on the "right side of the law", while learning valuable life lessons. Not only does TBP aid in lowering recidivism, this valuable program saves thousands of our tax dollars by administering cases which would otherwise be part of an overworked juvenile court system. Our volunteer base is comprised of teens, licensed Nevada attorneys and Clark County judges, who recognize and appreciate the value of TBP. Why am I sharing this with you? We need your help! We are in need of additional funding in order to help pay for the existing program and, hopefully, increase the size of the program to take on even more cases. To that end, we are proud to officially unveil Trial By Peers' "Adopt-a-Case" Program. You can ensure the future of this long-running program by adopting a case for as little as $250.00. While we will gladly accept any amount, for as little as $250.00 you or your firm will be honored on a plaque to be permanently displayed at the Clark County Bar Center. You will also receive recognition on our Web site and in our official magazine, The Communiqué. If you give in multiple increments of $250.00, all recognition shall reflect the number of cases you have adopted. Please help us make a positive impact on a teen's life, while doing your part to combat future crime in your neighborhood. Please give to Trial By Peers. Your tax deductible donation may be made online, or by fax or mail. Thank you for your support. Learn more about Trial By Peers. Thank you for your generosity. Clark County Bar Association Wins National Awards (Las Vegas, NV) October 28, 2009 - Clark County Bar Association President Hon. Frank Sullivan today announced that the Clark County Bar Association (CCBA) has received two 2009 Luminary Awards for communications excellence from the National Association of Bar Executives (NABE). In a gathering of the NABE Communications Section in Las Vegas last week, CCBA's graphic design specialist Amy Strocchia, received a Luminary Award for Excellence in Electronic Publications and a Luminary Award for Excellence in Regular Publications. The Clark County Bar Association was among just 14 bar associations and their communications professionals to receive Luminary Awards this year. The NABE Communications Section's Luminary Awards program, created in 1992 and named for the New Mexican "luminaria," recognizes excellence in marketing, public relations, regular publications, special publications, electronic publications and websites. Since its inception, the Luminary Awards competition has been sponsored by Thomson Reuters Legal. "We are very proud of Amy for earning this award," said executive director Eric Mann. "Bringing home an award of this caliber is a true testament to our staff's professionalism and is a wonderful recognition of the work this bar association does to service its members and the public." Luminary Award entries are judged on the following criteria: consistent quality of writing and readability; quality, clarity and effectiveness of design and format; success in meeting stated objectives and reaching targeted audience and effective use of available resources. "The NABE Luminary Awards provide recognition for excellence in the field of communications," said Barry Kolar, assistant executive director of the Tennessee Bar Association and chair of the Luminary Awards Committee. "These award winners represent the best in their field nationwide, so they and their associations can be proud of this special recognition."
