Community Service Calendar of Events 

This year the Clark County Law Foundation's Community Service Committee will focus its efforts on children in need, while promoting our profession within the community. The Committee undertakes this challenge through its various ongoing projects, including the Spring Cleaning Drive, Liberty Bell Award, Special Olympics, Memorial Service, and Shoes that Fit.

The Clark County Law Foundation’s Community Service Committee encourages bar members to donate items for people in need—especially children—for their Spring Cleaning Drive! The 2010 donation deadline was May 7, 2010.

Liberty Bell Award
Each year the Committee receives nominations and selects the recipient(s) for the Liberty Bell Award, awarded at the CCBA Luncheon in May.

Please nominate someone you feel meets the following criteria:

• Promotes a better understanding of our Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
• Encourages greater respect for the law and the courts.
• Stimulates a deeper sense of individual responsibility so citizens recognize their duties as well as their rights.
• Contributes to the effective functioning of our governmental institutions.
• Fosters a better understanding and appreciation of the law.

Nominations must include:

• First & last name
• Address
• Phone number
• A brief description of this person, how he or she has contributed to our community and how he or she meets the criteria mentioned. In your description, make sure to include any organizations this person is currently involved in and what his or her contribution has been.

The Community Service Committee is staffing volunteers for the Special Olympics’ So. Aquatics Regionals set for May 22, 2010 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The event will take place at the Heritage Park Aquatic Complex, 310 S. Racetrack Road Henderson, NV 89015. WHEN: September 24, 2010, 3:00-5:00 p.m. Reception to immediately follow service.

Each year the Committee coordinates a memorial service to pay tribute to and celebrate the members of our legal community who passed on the prior year. This year, the Memorial will honor those members who passed on from June 2, 2009 through June 1, 2010. If you know of a member who passed on and would like them to be included, please send their information, and contact name and number for their family member, to the Committee and it will contact the family for inclusion in the Memorial. The ceremony takes place in September at the Lloyd D. George Federal Courthouse. The Committee invites all CCBA members to attend the Memorial and honor their lost colleagues

This service is a project of the Clark County Law Foundation’s Community Service Committee in conjunction with the State Bar of Nevada, Eighth Judicial District Court, U.S. District Court, and Federal Bar Association-Las Vegas Chapter.

Shoes that Fit
For the past three years the Committee raised funds and collected new shoes to provide a new pair of shoes to each student at a deserving elementary school in Clark County. The Committee begins its fundraising and shoe collecting early each year, selects the school during the Summer, and delivers the shoes in December. This year, the Committee will once again deliver the shoes to the children the first Friday of December, December 3rd. To support Shoes that Fit, the Committee will hold three Vino Run fundraisers throughout the year, similar to those held in 2009. The details of the Vino Run fundraisers will be posted on the CCBA website as soon as they are coordinated, with one taking place in the Spring, Summer, and Fall. The Committee looks forward to the continued support from the CCBA membership, while we socialize and enjoy good food and drink at these fundraisers. The Committee needs donations and volunteers for its various projects. Whether you wish to join the Committee, make a donation of time or money, or volunteer for a specific project, it helps our efforts to support the community and promote the legal community within the Las Vegas area. Don’t wait any longer - volunteer now. The Committee meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month, at noon, at the Clark County Bar Association James Rogers Building located at 725 S. Eighth Street. What we need from you:
Please donate $25 or more to purchase new tennis shoes and support this worthy cause. We would be most grateful and together we can make a difference in a child’s life. Send a check payable to the Clark County Law Foundation (CCLF), and we would be pleased to purchase shoes on your behalf. Or, if you prefer, you can drop off brand new shoes at the Clark County Bar Association office.

Who we are benefiting: Children attending Clark County public schools. With your help we will make a difference and make a child smile one pair of shoes at a time.

How To Participate:
1. Look for fundraising events throughout the year and sign up to volunteer your time at CCBA events or at the Clark County Bar Center; or
2. Buy a pair of shoes in children’s sizes 11-6, and bring them to the Clark County Bar Association; or
3. Mail a check for $25 or more (payable to CCLF) and we will buy the shoes for you.
4. Volunteer to help distribute shoes at local school sites. Contact CCBA for details.

Past Shoes That Fit Collections:

2009-Served C.P Squires Elementary School.Over $8,000 was collected and more than 900 children received shoes.

December 2008-Served CC Ronnow Elementary School. Over $8,000 was collected and more than 900 children received shoes.

December 2007-Served Jay Jeffers Elementary School. Zappos donated $7,500 and 880 pairs of shoes were delivered to the entire school.

September 2007-Served JT McWilliams Elementary School. Over $6,000 was collected from CCBA members and 775 pairs of shoes were delivered to the entire school.

Summer Lunch League by Three Square

Summer Lunch League was started for one specific reason: hungry kids. More than 148,000 kids in southern Nevada receive free meals at school.
